Originality? Never Heard of It!

It's really starting to overwhelm me with all of this lack of originality business as a whole going around in Hollywood right now. Inception, was of the biggest movies last year was what? That's right, an ORIGINAL idea...who would've thought! You have re-makes being made that shouldn't even be touched, terrible ideas being made that studios think will be "mainstream", and CGI films coming out every other day it seems.

What boggles my mind is that the studios actually believe that some of these movies will be profitable and successful. It's hilarious at times to find out what they consider to be mainstream films, while smaller movies are regulated to little marketing and/or straight to DVD. With ticket prices being around $10 a ticket, it's no wonder that crowds aren't turning out for some of these.

"Originality...oh no, that's a thing of the past. What we need to do is capitalize on target audiences and give them old ideas, but make them new."

Exactly the reason why movie audiences are getting restless and why as a whole, each year is filled with less and less quality.

Oscar Politics

It's always popular to release films at the end of  the year to garner the most attention for award season. Some films will even go in a very limited release during December to get in contention. Mix that with studios, executives, and producers taking ads out in publications and billboards to promote the film for why it should win, we have quite the political movement.

Gladiator, a summer release, has been the earliest released film to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Back in 2004, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was released in Feb, making it nearly impossible for much award action. If they would've released the film later in the year or a mere couple of months earlier, guaranteed nominations would've been dealt. Not all studios put out movies just to gain awards, but it brings unlimited amounts of attention to the film and its team.

From Shakespeare in Love beating Saving Private Ryan to Crash beating Brokeback Mountain, politics during Oscar season will always be around, weather we like it or not. The part that bothers me the most is that the "Academy" actually buys into it.

No Garry, No!!!!!!!

The upcoming movie New Year's Eve. I know these Garry Marshall films are supposed to be fun in getting all of these big stars together, but it's tough to get into these characters and really care about them when so many are involved. I understand it's supposed to be light, fun, etc...but you don't have any "character actor" roles being played. Even in movies where big stars will play a supporting, character actor role, they give the film heart and substance. I want emotion involved with these Garry Marshall films. I want heart. It can be any emotion or a wide array of emotions, but give it to us. Give us some substance. Ocean's Eleven is a prime example of how to have big stars and intertwine them beautifully within the story, while each actor playing his part in the film.

Next time Garry, next time...

Silent Film?!?!

That's right! The Artist looks so intriguing and am really looking forward to seeing this coming up. Again, expect this to be heavily nominated when award season rolls around. You have to applaud the pure originality of the film, especially in a time when it's few and far between.

Check out the trailer...

The Descendents

If you haven't seen Alexander Payne's The Descendents, with Clooney, go see it. Expect him, the film, and Alexander Payne to load up on nominations when award season rolls around!
